Rune Solholm Bakken from Lillehammer is an ice hockey referee in the Norwegian elite league. That experience has definitely come in handy as founder of the IT company Rubic, which provides systems for sports clubs and associations.
Rune has always been active in sport and took that with him as motivation when he completed a Bachelor’s in “Marketing and Management” and a Master’s in “Innovation and Business Development” at Lillehammer University College. Today he is passionate about helping sports clubs and associations become more efficient.
Has made more than 100 teams and associations more efficient
“I frequently read about sports clubs that were struggling with financial management. Often it was something as basic as not having control over income and expenses. The business idea was to offer a complete IT solution with all the services sports clubs and associations need to manage operations, the member register and invoicing. In short, to make everyday life simpler for volunteers and staff so they can focus on what matters most, namely the sport itself or the work of the association,” says Rune.
“I saw a gap in the market,” says Rune.
It is a well-known phenomenon that many people who run teams and associations spend an incredible amount of time on administrative work, and manual overviews are often a source of great frustration.
“Our goal is to make everyday life simpler for the people doing this work. Saving time and better control are two key words,” says Rune.
Today, Rune has helped make more than 100 teams and associations more efficient.

One solution for everything, including an NIF-approved member register
There are many good reasons why the Norwegian Confederation of Sports requires all sports clubs to use an approved member register. For Rune Solholm Bakken, what was harder to understand was that the registers that actually were approved were outdated and poor. Today, Rubic’s newly developed membership system has been joined by its own app and website for sports clubs, a new registration system for events and a volunteer register.
“What Rubic does is bring all these services together in one and the same software solution. For volunteers and staff out in the sports clubs, being able to deal with just one supplier is a quantum leap.”
Many sports clubs have already bought a Rubic licence. Among them are large organisations such as Lillehammer Cycleklubb, Lillehammer Ishockey Klubb, Storhamar Yngres and Storhamar Fotball.
“We have a hungry development department that puts the customer first and is a supportive partner to the organisation. For many of our customers, this close dialogue is precisely an important element. Together we find good solutions and tailor them where possible,” says Rune.
